There are two main ways hosting companies provide green hosting: They Purchase Carbon Offsets or They use eco-friendly energy efficient servers.

Carbon Offsets
What it means by carbon offsetting is either helping to fund a project that aims to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide and/or planting trees.

Energy Saving Servers
Companies can also use energy saving appliances as well as using renewable energy sources such as wind, solar and hydro. This method is called Buy Green Tags or Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs).
